U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday froze more than $200 million in funds for recovery efforts in Syria as his administration reassesses Washington’s role in the long-drawn conflict.

Two other administration officials confirmed a Wall Street Journal report on Friday that said Trump had ordered the State Department to freeze more than $200 million in funds for recovery efforts in Syria while his administration reassesses Washington’s role in the conflict there.

A spokesperson for the White House’s National Security Council said that “in line with the President’s guidance, the Department of State continually re-evaluates appropriate assistance levels and how best they might be utilized, which they do on an ongoing basis.”

It is expected that US might leave Syria with a limited personnel on ground to watch for counterterrorism purposes and to monitor Iran's growing regional influence.

While US considers withdrawing from Syria and negotiations might start with North Korea, those actions display the US limitations; US cannot cope with China and Russia while having high tensions with Iran and North Korea. Negotiations with North Korea and keeping Iran nuclear deal intact make sense in this regard.
