Merkel was centrist leader. The promotion of environmentally-friendly policies, the minimum wage, opening the German borders to Syrian asylum seekers and policies allowing higher public spending are her major signatures during her 15 years leadership. Merkel has been supportive to Eurozone integration, authorizing large bailout programs for southern Europe states and programs to boost economic growth in the bloc amid the ongoing pandemic. Laschet also follows he same path. In that regard, the main approach of Germany is not expected to change if he will be elected in general election which was set September 26, 2021.

Lascher wants to modernize Germany and transform CDU into younger party with more female representation. No serious policy changed is expected of him if he will elected as Chancellor. Governing a state containing many regions at the losing end of globalization has moderated his conservative economic instincts a little. Protecting German industry is one of his key ambitions.

Germany seems optimizing the similar policies that Merkel has followed. Germany is not looking for new adventure. In future of Europe and Germany foreign policy, no major change is expected.
