Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has pardoned former President Alberto Fujimori who convicted of unlawful killings, was moved from prison to a hospital because of health problems.

Police in the capital city of Lima clashed with protesters after the news emerged. Kuczynski denied pardoning him as part of a deal to avoid his own impeachment over corruption allegations.

The news provoked mixed reactions on the night when Peruvians celebrate Christmas. Angry protesters gathered in Lima’s Plaza San Martín, the place where marches traditionally begin, while TV images showed Fujimori’s supporters cheering the decision outside the hospital where he was rushed on Saturday night.
