The MIT (Turkish Intelligence) and the security forces, which took action after the killing of Chechen commander Vahid Edelgiriev in Istanbul in November 2015, executed an operation called "Karma" in April 2016. The suspects were arrested by the court due to assassination of 7 Chechen leaders between the years 2000 and 2015 for having taken part in a 'front-line' team.

There has been a significant development in the arrest for the 2 Russian agents arrested on 24 October 2017. A letter was sent to the General Directorate of International Law and External Relations of the Ministry of Justice by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for Terror and Organized Crime Investigation. The prosecutor demanded that Anisimov and Smirnov to be released according to the last paragraph added to Decree no 694 (Decree Law) and Article 26 of the MIT Law.

Two Russian agent was released. Within 24 hours after the evacuation of 2 Russians 2 repatriations were sent from Russia to Turkey. In Crimea, Crimean Tatar National Assembly Vice-Presidents Ahtem Çiygöz and İlmi Ümerov, who were sentenced to imprisonment by the Russian court, were released before the prison they had detained. After the evictions, these two politicians were returned to Turkey. Ümerov and Çiygöz, who came to Ankara, returned to Ukraine after a while.
 
It was reported that the Russian agents and the politicians of the Crimean were exchanged.
