In October 2017, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a law ratifying Moscow's deal with Syria to deploy its forces in the country indefinitely, in a move seen as firming their long-term presence.
The original deal, signed in Damascus in January, set out the terms under which Russia can use its Hmeymim air base in Latakia Province, which it has used to carry out air strikes against forces opposing President Bashar al-Assad.
An agreement with Syria, which has not yet been approved, would make the facility at the port of Tartus a full naval base, where Russia can keep up to 11 warships.
While Turkey increasing its influence in Arap Penisula, Russian military presence might threat Turkish influence in the long-run. As long as Turkey and Russia might come up to terms of economic benefit, a possible clash can be prevented.
