Including 2 reporters arrested on 31/08/2017 in Antalya airport in relation to July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, the number of German citizens arrested tolled up to 12 in relation to coup attempt. Out of 12 people 4of them have dual passports. It has deepened the political crisis between two countries. Germany has opposed the allegations strongly.

On the other hand side, German Socialist Party leader, Martin Schulz, publicly stated that EU should stop the aid to Turkey till Turkey improves the situation. This has been an important remark to show that German political leaders have consensus on Turkey. Following the elections in September 2017, Turkish - German relations will be more on tension.
