Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that her government will work within “existing laws” to curb the protests amid speculation it might invoke Emergency Regulations Ordinance, which would allow city leader and adviser to “make any regulations whatsoever” deemed “desirable in the public interest.
On the other hand, the protests enter into third month with no sign of letting up. Although the number of protesters in a protest decline, the frequency of the protests has been increasing. Thus, indicates that there are many groups which demand different compromises emerge. On one hand, it is a good sign for Chinese government that different groups mean less strength. On the other hand, it emphasizes that these protests would like to continue for a long time. Thus, would disturb the business and economy on longer period.
Also, the broken number of protesters in different groups highlights a different concern in future; radicalization. Actually, the behaviours of protests start changing. The character of protest is to gather and make one protest. However, we start to observe attacks like “hit-and-run”. If this shall increase in numbers and look like urban guerrilla skirmishes tactics, it would only invite the possible intervention by Beijing.
